Deep cleaning
A thorough cleaning requires taking the gun apart and making intimate contact with all the parts. Take it easy. Shotguns are easier. Be sure to do a thorough cleaning once a year or twice, or after multiple boxes have passed your gun. I usually do a dense scouring, and the residue accumulation becomes obvious.
